Abstract

Well, just in case you’re interested in what’s the report about I just blogged my abstract from my sci report.
Enjoy??

With a huge disappointment on how many people in the nowadays society taken this magnificent invention, the Blu-Tack, for granted, the many wheels whirled and cause more questions to ask how the Blu-Tack is made and most importantly its effectiveness. Eventually the student research project was the effectiveness of Blu-Tack according to the stickiness of it on holding a poster in hot conditions.
Being invented by a laboratory researcher called Austin Carpenter who wanted to make another sealant product, made Blu-Tack instead. Til now the secret of how and what Blu-Tack have not been revealed.
Since this topic is related towards hot conditions, heat has to be used in this experiment. Convection, radiation and conduction was all researched The final methods decided to be used were using the stove fire, steam of hot water and a table lamp.
Despite having the results supporting the hypothesis made in the beginning of the research, the hypothesis should have been more detailed. The results also did not answer the topic question. It was said that the methods should have been changed and that there were a few careless errors during the conduction of the experiment.
Discovering how heat can greatly affect Blu-Tack’s stickiness, it can affect the durability of it. During the experiment, it was discovered that the more heat is directed at the Blu-Tack, the stickier it will get. This allows the poster to be stuck onto the wooden lid longer but the more it gets stickier, the more unusable it gets. This will ruin the Blu-Tack and therefore not be able to use again since it lost its stickiness. No wonder the package tells users to put them in a cool environment. This proves that the stickiness of Blu-Tack is one greatest factor in the effectiveness of it.

Method

I had to redo my method since my topic kind of changed and I thought this was more suitable and accurate to investigate my SRP. Here you go then…
The materials used in the experiment was a jar of hot water, a table lamp, Bostik’s Blu-Tack, a thermometer, a stopwatch timer, a glossy paper which is also the same quality as a poster paper, and a wooden lid of a box to act as the wall the poster sticks to, and a stove.
The three methods that was used to analysis the stickiness of Blu-Tack was holding it over the stove, over the steam of the hot water and leaving it near the table lamp. The top of the glossy paper was stuck to the wooden lid. The stove was set up at a low setting for the fire so it would not burn the paper or wooden lid. At the same time, the stopwatch timer was set up to start timing when the glossy paper stuck onto the wooden lid was held over the fire. Throughout the whole process, glossy paper stuck on the wooden lid was kept at a close watch for any burning that might happen. The stopwatch timer was stopped when the glossy paper dropped off the wooden lid. This method was repeated several times. The same set up process as the method before was done. Instead of the holding it over the stove, it was held over a jar of steaming hot water. This method was also repeated several times. The same process to set up the equipment as the other two methods was also done for this method. As the stopwatch timer started, the wooden lid with the glossy paper was stuck on was left 3cm from the table lamp. When the glossy paper dropped off, the same method was repeated several times.

Re-post #1

Topic
Blu Tack & its stickiness in hot conditions

Topic Question
The stickiness of Blu Tack on holding a poster in hot conditions

Hypothesis
It would take a long period of time for the factors in the hot conditions to affect the Blu Tack holding up the poster.

tired tired...

nearly finished with my sci report................

i will finish the rest tomorrow morning.......

oh man..still have to do that booklet...

*sigh*

Argh..re-posting my stuff

Yep, i'm most likely going to re-post everything that i have done so far so it makes sense to Miss Zhang
and ...
I WILL SOO GET THIS SRP REPORT DONE BY TOMORRRROOOWW!!

IDEAS TO DO THE EXPERIMENT *re-post*

Use blu tack to hold up a poster in different environments

Use the heat to test the stickiness of blu tack and how long it holds up the poster

At least it's going somewhere

I can't believe I thought of the experiment was sticking the posters in the sun for a period of time!!
Now i get what you're meant to do for this experiment for this topic...
*Working on sci report*

What should I do?!?!

Yes, I haven't blogged much so I gonna get a bad mark for my blog mark. Just to let you know I've done everything that you're meant to do except I didn't post it in my blog. Like the person I am, I'm NOT really a blogger-type of person.

On the other hand, my experiment has also completely failed.......
As you know my SRP topic is the effectiveness of blu-tack on holding up a poster in hot conditions.
I realised I should have done my experiment when Miss Zhang told us to do it (the start of May) but of course, I didn't. When I wanted to start it in the later half of May, it rained and poured for the rest of the month.
I went into panic mode and emailed Miss but then luckily someone suggested that I should change my method a bit..and that's exactly what I did...
I didn't want to post one big entry of everything I've done so I'll eventually reveal my modified method, results and etc. through many entries.

Well good luck to me..and to everyone else who reads my blog...

Effectiveness of Blu Tack on holding up a poster in hot dry conditions

Method
1. Buy a piece of cardboard and Bostik Blutack from the newsagency.
2. Stick the piece of cardboard in the different areas that was mentioned before. Eg bedroom, bathroom, living room, kitchen, backyard shed, outside in the sun, outside in the shade.
3. Use finger sized blu-tack to stick on one side of the cardboard.
4. Observe each day how sticky the blu-tack is.
5. Record the results
5.  Repeat the experiement using normal A4 white paper.

IDEAS TO DO THE EXPERIMENT

Use blu tack to hold up a poster in different environments
Use the heat to test the stickiness of blu tack and how long it holds up the poster

Thursday, March 11, 2010

Independent, dependent and controlled variables ^^

Independent variables

>The stickiness of the Blu-Tack eg New Blu-Tack, reusing Blu-Tack

>The temperature

>The surface the poster is stuck on eg rough, smooth

Dependent variable

>How long the poster will stay up for

Controlled variables

> The size of the Blu-Tack

>The time that the poster is put up

>Size of the paper

More thinking done *sigh*

Type/brand of Blu-Tack

- Only one brand of Blu-Tack – Bostik.

- Can be blue or other different colours. Might use blue coloured ones and also the green coloured ones.

Type of paper

- Not bothered with too many kinds of paper.

- A4 normal paper, glossy paper and cardboard type paper.

Poster stuck inside or outside??
- I’ll eliminate some of the areas but for now here are the places where I might test this…
- Inside the house
Bedroom
Bathroom

Living room

Kitchen

- Outside the house
Backyard shed

Outside in the sun
Outside in the shade

Laundry room

Veranda

What kind of surface you stick the poster on
- Not too sure yet…

When and for how long do you do this experiment for

- Probs have to check the weather everyday and try to do it as many times as possible. Should be setting it out for a whole day at least three times each week. Do the experiment for at least 3 months??

- Btw it’s also nearly winter time so I’m not so sure about the ‘hot dry’ condition thingy..but it’ll work out…

Planning it..

Some random but interesting and useful uses of Bostik's Blu-Tack...

USES

Household
  • Secure dog food bowls on floor
  • Use Blu Tack to remove dust in awkward places
  • Holds and positions scenery in fish tanks
DIY
  • Dropped screws or nails easily picked up using Blu Tack
  • Attach a paper plate with Blu Tack under Paint pail to catch the drips
  • Use a blob of Blu Tack to seal opened cartridges
  • Stop door from banging by placing a little in door recess at top.
Office/School
  • Hold mouse pad down
  • Clean computer keys with a blob of Blu Tack

Research stuff

SORRY SORRY if it doesn't make sense it's just so research notes...so ya...
HOT CONDITIONS THAT AFFECT THINGS
Radiation, sun, steam, convection, fire
Room temp 20-25 degrees Celsius
Radiation, conduction, convection
Radiation:
-          When  electromagnetic  waves  travel  through  space.
-          When electromagnetic waves come in contact with an object, the waves transfer the heat to the object.
-          Eg a camp fire, microwave oven, a light bulb
Conduction:
-          The transfer of heat between substances that are direct contact with each other.
-          The better the conductor, the more rapidly heat will transfer.
-          Good conductors are iron, copper, silver, steel
-          Eg heating a pan up
Convection:
-          The up and down movement of gases and liquids caused by heat transfer
-          eg wind currents, hot air balloon, and lower floors of a building being cooler than the top floor
BLU TACK
WHO INVENTED IT AND WHY?
Bostik’s parent company Total is a multinational energy company committed to leveraging innovation and initiative to provide a sustainable response to humankind’s energy requirements.
Found as the Boston Blacking Co. in Chelsea Massachusetts in 1889. Shoe industry and adhesives industry.
A clean, safe and a simple alternative to tapes and pins. Discovered in England during the development of a Bostik industrial adhesive.
Invented by Austin carpenter (1921-) in 1971 in England”   “
1970 – Laboratory researcher for sealant manufactcturer Ralli Bondite of waterlooville, England. Was going to make a product of sealant but pliable and semi-elastic
Blue, malleable, adhesive material normally purchased in sheets stored between pieces of something like industrial-strength greaseproof paper
Why blue? So children don’t mistake it as lollies. Clearly visible if dropped in food. Pins were used for fixing things in the past, like furniture materials, clothing hems, etc. Blue due to the sterilisation fluid used.
WHAT’S IT USED FOR?
Stick up posters, post cards, certificates, messages
Hold things in place eg flower pots, ornaments in place, photo frames
Remove dust from hard to get places

The manufacturers of blu tack, the adhesives specialists Bostik, are completely closed-lipped about the composition of the material. They are willing to provide info on the material in general, but the specifics of its ingredient are a closely-kept-secret.
Synthetic polymer base, non toxic

Got it!!

Experiment - Effectiveness of Blu Tack on holding up a poster in hot dry conditions.

Argh, I should just stick with...

...Effectiveness of Blu Tack on holding up a poster in hot dry conditions.

I think it's very possible that i might change my topic but i'll stick with this one for now to be safe.
More research and thinking to be done now...

Some other ideas went *ding* in my head

Here are some ideas i came by when i was researching for the 'blu tack' topic...
 - Do different brands of orange juice contain different levels of vitamin C?
Being a bit vague & unlogical here but does this mean i have to drink a lot of orange juice. Wait scratch
   that, i don't need to...
 - Does Antibacterial Hand Soap Kill More Bacteria Than Non-Antibacterial Hand Soap?
    Mmm..interesting...
 - Do sound barriers reduce noise? If so, what types of barrier is most effective?
Well. this sound barrier could apply to a lot of things eg ..
Actually i'll need to do more research on that.

Yeah...i think this is the topic...

Just looked at my DET Portal emails and read some of Miss Zhang's ones.
Downloaded and looked through the 'Project ideas' file.
I think i might do the...
• Effectiveness of Blu Tack on holding up a poster in hot dry conditions.

i'll do some research for this...

Better start blogging..haha...

I kinda haven't (well actually not at all) done any blogging ...
Still a bit confused about what research topic i should do but then...i better start researching and thinking hard now...*sigh*...
